AI Visibility Research: How Often AI Assistants Recommend Local Businesses

Customers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity — not Google — for a good dentist, med spa or surgeon near them. AI names only a handful of businesses per answer. We wanted to know how many local businesses actually make that shortlist, so we measured real markets, one AI answer at a time. Every number below comes from stored AI answers and can be rechecked.

Across 782 tracked businesses in 1,104 AI answers, the share that never came up ranged from 17% to 68% depending on the city and industry — most local businesses simply do not exist when a customer asks an AI assistant.
